Like most people, I once had a negative view of bankruptcy. It carried a certain stigma in my mind, ideas of failure, irresponsibility, or poor decision-making. But over time, that perspective began to shift.
Early on, I was asked to assist a close friend who was going through financial struggles. She was working multiple jobs while caring for a child, an elderly parent, and a disabled husband. Interestingly, I’m not talking about myself, but in many ways, her situation mirrored parts of my own life. That experience opened my eyes.
I quickly realized that many people who file for bankruptcy are no different from me, a neighbor, or a close friend. At the end of the day, we never truly know what someone else is going through. Life happens. Circumstances change. And sometimes, despite doing everything “right,” people still find themselves in difficult financial positions.
One of the most meaningful parts of this work is helping to remove the stigma that surrounds bankruptcy. The shame, the feelings of incompetence, and the self-doubt that often come with it. Bankruptcy is not a reflection of someone’s worth or character. In many cases, it’s a necessary step toward stability and healing.
I’ve found that most of the people I meet aren’t irresponsible. They’re doing their best with what they have, often carrying more than most people can see. What they need isn’t judgment—they need guidance, understanding, and a path forward.
At its core, bankruptcy represents something powerful: a FRESH START. A second chance. An opportunity to reset and rebuild.
As I help guide individuals through that process, I find myself growing too. It’s a constant reminder to be mindful, to be intentional, and to be a better steward of what I’ve been given.
This work isn’t just about finances. It’s about grace, perspective, and the opportunity to begin again.
